Graduate & Faculty/Staff Housing Move-Out Checklist

Start Planning Your Move

Please use this checklist to make sure that you've completed all necessary tasks prior to moving out of your on-Grounds housing:

  1. Cancel any extra utility services you pay for individually, such as telephone or TV service.

  2. Leave your forwarding address with the US Post Office. We cannot get your mail from your mailbox after you move out of your current housing.

  3. Please enter your forwarding mailing and email addresses, as well as any phone number changes, with Housing & Residence Life for our records. If you are unable to access this page, please email your forwarding information to housing@virginia.edu.

  4. Remove all personal items from your storage bin, closets, cabinets, dresser drawers, balcony/terrace, and outside area. Be sure to remove grills, bikes, toys, flower pots, etc. No items may be left in or around the apartment/house. The University does not provide storage for personal belongings after vacating and closing of residential spaces.

If you accidentally leave an item behind:

    •  Items remaining after a space has been officially vacated will be treated as abandoned property. You will be charged for the removal, transport and storage of all items:
          • Charge per box under 25 pounds: $50 (minimum charge)
          • Charge per box over 25 pounds: $75
          • Charge per fridge or TV: $100
    • To claim abandoned property within 120 days after the official vacate date, contact the Housing & Residence Life mailroom supervisor at housingmail@virginia.edu.
    • Property not claimed at the end of the 120 period will be sold through UVA Surplus Property or donated to charitable organizations.

  5. Be sure that you are not removing any University property, including wireless access points; University furniture; mini-blinds and/or vertical blinds; and recycling containers.

  6. Clean your room/apartment/house. Important areas to focus on include the stove, refrigerator, furniture (if applicable), floors, walls, and bathroom. Please see our Cleaning Guidelines, which includes a list of damages fees for repairing, replacing, or cleaning, based on the materials and labor required.

  7. Lock your door.

  8. Return your key(s) and laundry clean cash card (if applicable) to the Housing and Residence Life Office in Gibbons House during our regular business hours of Monday to Friday,  8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Any keys not received by your scheduled move-out day will be considered lost. The lock on the housing will be changed, and you will be billed for the lock and key replacement.

  9. Turn in all parking permits to Parking & Transportation for a refund, or exchange your parking permit for a different parking area at UVA.

  10. Consider donating unwanted items to the Hoos Reuse program, which allows you to pass along gently used items during move-out -- clothing, furniture, electronics, non-perishable foods -- to benefit Charlottesville nonprofits. Donation bins are located both on- and off-Grounds.

We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!
