Caring for your Space
The following guidelines should help provide direction for the care and maintenance of furnishings and equipment in on-Grounds housing, including suggested standards for cleanliness. These guidelines are used in the inspection of apartments when residents vacate.
Floors
- Wood: broom clean and free of spillage.
- Tile and linoleum: broom clean and free of spillage, excess wax, and dirt build up. Use only water-soluble wax on asphalt tile floors.
Walls
- Kitchen walls: keep free of grease and food.
- Bathroom tile: keep free of soap build-up. Loose tiles should be reported for Facilities Management.
- Painted walls: keep free of crayon, pencil markings, and excessive fingerprints.
- Tacks, hangers, nails, screws, contact paper, glue, wallpaper, or stick-ons should not be attached to walls.
Furniture
- Report necessary furniture repairs to Facilities Management immediately.
- Upholstery should be free from stains and accumulated dust.
Windows
- The insides of windows should be wiped clean, and be free of smears and obvious marks.
- Mini blinds (and vertical blinds in Copeley Hill) should be cleaned with warm water and mild detergent, using a sponge or dampened cloth. Blinds can be cleaned hanging in place (tilt the slats down) or removed from the brackets. If cleaned in place, a towel placed on the floor and/or windowsill will absorb any water that might drip.
Kitchen
- Kitchen cabinets, counter tops, and the sink should be kept clean and free of grease and food.
- The stove should be thoroughly cleaned with detergent, including the burners, oven, and broiler compartment. Lift up the stove-top to clean underneath. Use a good cleaner and scouring pad on the oven, then wash surfaces with soap and water. Wash the broiler pan as you would any cooking utensil.
- Refrigerators should be damp wiped inside and outside, using warm water and baking soda.
- Do NOT leave the refrigerator unplugged!
