Fire Pit Usage Guidelines

Fire pits have been placed in residential communities for the use of residents.

Fire pits located in residential areas must be approved by Housing & Residence life (HRL) and permitted through EHS per university policy. Fire pits in residential areas not approved by HRL and permitted by EHS will be removed and stored at the owner’s expense.

HRL maintains fire pits and insures annual inspection of the units by a licensed plumber certified in gas as well as periodic checks of the units by maintenance staff. In addition, units are assessed for proper operation when fuel canisters are changed. UVA Facilities Management (FM) staff performs annual inspections and canister changes. Documentation is found in the FM work order system and is available upon request.

Outside of approved use, fire pit fuel sources are locked and fire pits are not available for use by the general public. Use of fire pits is managed through resident and/or college staff and is available for resident use through a reservation system only.
