Summer Resident Assistant Position Description, 2024

POSITION SUMMARY

The Summer Resident Assistant (RA) is a member of the UVA Housing & Residence Life (HRL) Team. These staff members are crucial to the daily operations of the summer housing program.

A small number of residence halls are open to students enrolled in Summer Session classes, and to summer conference groups. The Summer RA is responsible for the execution of the summer housing program and performs various tasks to support the overall HRL summer operation. The Summer RA supports the residents of their community in achieving HRL's mission: working collaboratively to create inclusive, welcoming communities where residents are empowered to engage their potential as scholars and leaders through self-governance and participation in their residential community.

EXPECTATIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in weekly meetings with the wider summer RA team and the professional HRL staff.
  • Perform administrative tasks associated with the housing of summer school students, such as assisting with checking students in and out of their rooms and performing room inspections.
  • Participate in a shared coverage and on-call schedule, which will include completing rounds at times set by the Summer Lead Residence Life Coordinator. Serve as a resource to students and guests while on duty.
  • Be present in your building. Your assigned on-Grounds housing is expected to be your primary residence for the summer, and you must reside in the building until the conclusion of the Summer RA position.
  • Perform programming and community enrichment activities as assigned, with the expectation at least one program a week will be held for summer residents.
  • Advise and support residents. Ease their adjustment to and through their University experience (including an explanation the Resident Staff function). Foster meaningful relationships with residents, be a sounding board and listening ear, and connect residents to resources on Grounds.
  • Act as a concerned, non-judgmental peer advisor, whose goal is to assist residents in resolving concerns or problems. Act as a referral for residents, utilizing community and University resources. Ensure that supervisors are informed of concerns with individual residents and the community.
  • Serve as a positive role model for residents by following and supporting the University’s Standards of Conduct, Resident Staff expectations, and the Housing Terms & Conditions.
  • Ensure that University policies and procedures relevant to maintaining a safe and welcoming community are uniformly addressed. Summer RAs will identify and refer concerns that are too severe or beyond the scope of Resident Staff.
  • Support the academic mission of the University through fostering a residential community conducive to academic success, engagement with association dean (if applicable), and referring students to resources.

TERMS OF POSITION

  • The Summer RA position begins on May 19, 2024, and ends on August 10, 2024. Summer RAs must move into their summer room assignment by May 19, and from their summer assignment to their fall assignment on August 10, unless a different date is agreed and approved by a member of the professional staff team.
  • The Summer RA role must be the only residential staff role held during the summer.
  • Time away from Grounds is permitted; however, leave must be approved by the Summer Lead Residence Life Coordinator and may not be granted during high-volume periods.
  • Failure to meet the responsibilities of the position, misconduct, and/or any violation of UVA policy may be grounds for personnel action (i.e., warning, probation, or termination).

ELIGIBILITY

In order to apply, students must:

  • Be enrolled at the University of Virginia as a full-time student in an undergraduate program, or be completing the final year of a fifth-year Master's program. Enrollment in summer classes is not required.
  • Be in good academic standing with their school of enrollment and must meet the minimum cumulative 2.25 GPA requirement at the time of application, and while under the Program Agreement.
  • Be in good judicial/disciplinary standing with Housing & Residence Life and the University.

REMUNERATION

Summer RAs will receive:

  • A furnished room rent-free during the term of the Summer RA position.
  • $1,000 for the summer period.

NOTE: Students receiving financial aid should confer with UVA Student Financial Services to understand whether some or all remuneration will be applied to reducing the balance of loans or grants in the financial aid package rather than in refunds of room and board payments.

Parking permits are not part of the Resident Staff remuneration. There is no requirement that any member of Resident Staff have a personal vehicle on Grounds. Housing & Residence Life will send the name of members of Resident Staff to Parking & Transportation for the summer. If a member of Resident Staff wishes to have a vehicle on-Grounds, it is their responsibility to purchase a parking permit from Parking & Transportation. The location and availability of parking is subject to change at any time. This includes but is not limited to special events, construction, or changes by Parking & Transportation.
