How the Houses Got Their Names

Faulkner Apartments are in the vicinity of Faulkner House, which was named for William Faulkner, the prolific writer about the American south who was the University’s Writer in Residence in the late 1950s.

  • Atcheson Laughlin Hench of New Jersey became professor of English in 1926. A significant contributor to H. L. Menken’s American language encyclopedia and the Oxford English Dictionary, he was a noted etymologist who tracked down the derivation of 60,000 words and phrases (now in The Edgar Shannon Library).
  • Born in Canada, Samuel Alfred Mitchell was named professor of astronomy and director of the Leander-McCormick Observatory in 1919. He was considered an authority on eclipses of the sun, having traveled 100,000 miles to observe ten total eclipses. He was the first faculty member elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
  • Edward Eugene Younger of Arkansas joined the University faculty in 1946. A WWII Navy veteran, he also taught history at the Naval Academy and the Naval War College. Chairman of the department of history from 1962, he became dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences in 1966. Returning to full-time teaching in 1969, he was elected Alumni Professor in 1974 and 1979.
