How the Houses Got Their Names

The name Copeley was attached to the property located in the North Grounds area. Acquired from the Massie family, the name does not represent any University personality.

  • Born in Kansas, Charles Abbott was named the first dean of the new Graduate School of Business Administration in 1954, and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1972.
  • Thomas Munford Boyd of Roanoke, Va. joined the School of Law faculty in 1947, simultaneously serving as a Charlottesville juvenile and domestic relations court judge and a staff member of the National Defense Advisory Commission. He was blind from the age of two.
  • Garrad Glenn of Georgia joined the School of Law faculty in 1929. He was a strong defender of the First Amendment and created a new academic field, creditor’s rights, which is now a standard part of law school curricula.
  • A native Virginian, Frederick Dean Goodwin Ribble became dean of the School of Law in 1939. He held forthright positions on civil rights, was the US Delegate to the Geneva Conference on Freedom of Information, and was a member of the National Commission for UNESCO.
  • Born in Virginia, Tipton Ray Snavely received the University’s first Ph.D. in economics. He was named economics department chair in 1923. His work outside the classroom led to the separation of the McIntire School from the College of Arts & Sciences and plans for the Darden School.
